In the Greek area there are 6.000 islands and islets in total, scattered in the Aegean and the Ionian Sea. The islands of Greece have endless and splendid sinuous coasts that present great diversity: beaches stretching over many kilometres, small bays and coves, sandy beaches with dunes, pebbly shores and coastal caves surrounded by steep rocks with the characteristic dark sand of volcanic soils.
